Week of December 18, 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Students in Grades 4, 5, 6 will be able to participate in an outdoor activity at Mount Pakenham, Ontario on Thursday, January 25th. Similar to last year, we will be offering the options of Skiing or W.O.W (Winter Outdoor Wonder- including tubing, snowshoeing and orienteering.

I will be sending home ski forms on Monday.  Last registration day will be Tuesday, January 16.

Language- we are finishing our Christmas recount

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week is Christmas Spirit Week! Money collected will provide a warm meal to those in need.


Monday- Red, White, & Green Day
Tuesday- Festive Hat Day
Wednesday- Elf Day (Dress like an Elf)
Thursday- Christmas Sweater Day
Friday- Cookie Decorating (Buy raffle tickets, .25 cents or 5 for $1)


Language- we are finishing our book trailer for The Wild Robot
                 - we are learning to write a personal recount

       Math - we are continuing to review multiplication and long division
                 - we will start our unit on elapsed time

Religion/Family Life - we will begin Theme 2: Living in Relationship in Fully Alive
                                       - we are preparing for Christmas by reading passages from the
                                       bible and placing ornaments on our Jesse Tree

We have the Elephant Sale on Friday December 8th! Money raised will be going towards our Christmas Charities.

We have our virtue assembly on Tuesday December 5th at 8:45. All parents are welcome!

Week of November 27, 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week...

Language- we are learning about conjunctions to help us write fluent sentences
                - we are learning to make a book trailer for The Wild Robot

       Math- we are learning to divide two and three-digit whole numbers by
                  one-digit whole numbers

Last week...

Students learned about the Area Model/Magic Square and Traditional Algorithm of Multiplication

Week of November 20 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week...

Language - we are continuing to learn about punctuation
                  - we will do a reading assessment, CASI, on Wednesday Nov 22
                  - we will do Google Hangouts to connect with a grade 4/5 class in
                     Alberta as part of the Global Read Aloud

        Math - we are continuing to learn about different multiplication strategies
                  - the Multiplication Activity book is due on Thursday Nov 23

This is our Bump It Up wall. It shows examplars for level 1, 2, 3, and 4 writing. Students are encouraged to refer to this wall to help them write using ROPES.




Important date to keep in mind:

Friday Nov 24 is a PD day.

Week of November 13 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week...

Language- we are learning how to use punctuation properly to help establish a
                  distinctive voice in our writing
                - we are using a Bump It Up wall to better understand the ROPES strategy
                - we are finishing The Wild Robot

      Math - we are learning to use different multiplication strategies to solve problems

Last week...

We created a wreath for Remembrance day. Students wrote about what peace means to them and how they can be peacemakers.


Students also learned how to do multiplication with their fingers. It's a very neat trick!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The flu/cold season is here. Students have been asking for tissue paper. Unfortunately, we don't have any more tissue boxes. I would like to ask each student to bring a box of tissue for our classroom. Thank you!

This week...

Language- we are continuing to read The Wild Robot
                 - we are starting Buddy Reading with Ms. Kubacki's kindergarten class on Friday
                 - we are  learning to write effectively with ROPES



Math - we are finishing our whole numbers up to 100 000 unit
         - we have a test on Friday November 10
         - we are starting our multiplication and division unit

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This is an exciting week with many events going on. Some important dates to keep in mind:

Report Cards go home on Wednesday November 1.
Picture Forms will be sent home on Monday and are due Friday November 3.
Virtue Assembly on Thursday November 2 at 10:15am. All parents are welcome.

This is spirit week for students and teachers.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. For the week of October 10, 2017 we are doing the following things:
 
     Language: - Global Read Aloud: The Wild Robot (started October 2nd)
                        - we are learning to order main ideas and supporting details  into paragraphs
                        - we are reviewing proper use of capitals and periods in a sentence
                        - we are continuing to learn about Samaritans on the Digital Road

           Math: - we are co-creating success criteria for doing a presentation
                       - we are presenting our Line Graph Assignment
                       - we have a Data Management Unit test on Friday October 17th

                              Data Management Unit:
                                 - primary vs. secondary data

                                 - stem and leaf plot
                                 - bar graph

                                 - drawing conclusions from graphs
